Esperanza – An Auberge Resort in Cabo, San Lucas
Nestled within the private enclave of Punta Ballena in Cabo San Lucas and overlooking the dramatic sea of Cortez, this award-winning resort, whose spa was deemed one of the best in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, offers an incomparable pampering experience marked by highly attentive service, lush vegetation, traditional Baja décor and traditional Mexican cuisine. A favoured getaway for celebrities the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Leonardo DiCaprio, the Esperanza resort is the ultimate romantic escape, where guests often forego bathing in the sea to enjoy the dramatic crashing of the waves against the cliffs, from the peace and magnificence of an expansive main infinity pool (one of many on the resort), whose exquisite design challenges the eye to determine where the man-made construction ends and the endless sea begins.
The Esperanza rises over two secluded coves which form a natural barrier that ensures privacy and seclusion. Its design is reminiscent to that of a Mexican village, spread out over 17 acres of lush vegetation. Landscaped and winding walkways lead to 57 luxurious casitas and suites, 60 villas and 36 private residences, ranging from one to four bedrooms and measuring from 925 to 4,000 square feet in size (all accommodation boasts sweeping ocean views). The interiors and breezy outdoor gardens are punctuated by sculptures created by Mexico’s hottest international artists. Within the rooms, hand-crafted furniture, traditional fabrics, large private terraces (many of which have infinity hot tubs or their own private pool), and spacious bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and showers built for two, remind us of the importance of life’s little luxuries.
While lazing on comfy sub beds by the pool, guests enjoy wonderfully attentive service from the staff, who tempt them with tray after tray of free margarita samples, fruit skewers and free hand and foot massages. If relaxing in the shade is more your style, don’t be surprised to find the staff adjusting the position of your parasol as the sun makes its way from east to west.
The cuisine is another major attraction; there are a plethora of restaurants ranging in ambience from elegant to laid-back. For the ultimate romantic dinner, it’s got to be El Restaurante, nestled in the vertiginous bluffs and offering a breathtaking view of the sea. Enjoy Executive Chef, Gonzalo Cerda’s ‘cocina del sol’, a fusion of Mexican and Mediterranean flavours. Then there is the more casual La Palapa grill, offering tempting meat and fish dishes with seasonal, mouthwatering sides.
The Esperanza Hotel encapsulates the very essence of a five-star resort, with a plethora of fun activities that will probably give rise to the best memories of your stay. Enjoy a weekly Argentinean ‘asado’ on the beach or the ‘Mexicanismo’ evening, sampling food from various regions of Mexico and enjoying live musical performances and a dazzling fireworks display. There are also special Tequila tasting evenings, cooking sessions on the beach and more activities than you will probably have time for: everything from salsa, painting and Spanish lessons to horseback riding, historic sight-seeing, snorkelling, whale watching (whales are often visible from the exterior terraces), kayaking and even shopping!
Most visitors cite the Eperanza’s outdoor spa as the highlight of their visit; incorporating the elements of water, light, desert and sea, it offers a wide variety of pampering, restorative and wellness treatments and boasts inviting features like a steam cave, soaking tubs, outdoor showers, dreamlike waterfalls bathed in light, a VIP couples’ treatment room, beauty studio, fitness area (featuring cutting-edge equipment) and complimentary agua frescas beverages.
The Esperanza is widely known as a five-star getaway; a place to reconnect with friends, family; to celebrate or rekindle romance and this is one of the reasons why it makes an ideal port of call while on a cruise to Caribbean islands like St. Lucia, Barbados or St. Barts, which offer vastly different imagery and experiences. At the Esperanza just chilling pool-side or soothing tired muscles in the private terrace Jacuzzi after a hectic day of activities is what most appeals. But sail away to St. Lucia and the beach will probably be the focal point of your stay; sink your feet into the soft white sands or have a beach-side massage and afterwards, bathe in crystal clear waters that embrace your body in their warmth. For a bit of cultural and architectural enrichment, Grenada is an ideal stop, with its myriad of museums and French colonial-style houses. Nature lovers will love floating alongside graceful stingrays in the Cayman Isles though much closer to the Esperanza, the variety of fauna in the colourful coral reefs of Cozumel, will take your breath away. If more than one island tickles your fancy, a cruise is surely the most comfortable, laid-back way of taking all these different experiences in.
