Out-of-the-Way Luxury Resorts

Ventanas-night
Do you ever dream about vacationing somewhere that’s a little bit off the beaten path? Many of our clients do and there are some fantastic, intimate resorts throughout the Caribbean that we recommend. Here are three at the top of my list…

Tiamo (Bahamas)

If you’re looking to get away from it all and find a tropical hideaway that’s not far from home, look to Tiamo on South Andros Island in the Bahamas. The 10-villa resort is only accessible by boat or seaplane so you can imagine the level of seclusion you’ll find upon arrival. It’s perhaps why so many honeymooners and celebrities choose this resort.
The expansive private beach—dotted with palm trees—is complemented by Tiamo’s infinity pool, which is never crowded since many of the villas are outfitted with private pools. Meals, soft drinks, transfers, and watersports are included in the daily rate so your only out of pocket are extras like excursions (the scuba diving, snorkeling, and bone fishing is amazing in this area), the spa (albeit its offerings are not as extensive as other Caribbean resorts), and alcoholic beverages.

There are four types of accommodations at Tiamo: Exclusive Pool Villa, Pool Villa, Island Breeze Villa, and The Bird’s Nest. Most of our clients opt for the air-conditioned Exclusive Pool Villa because it has direct beach access, features a huge private deck, and includes a 173-square-foot private pool. The Pool Villa is essential the same as the exclusive version but the deck is 200 square feet smaller. The four Island Breeze Villas are also lovely but they are not air-conditioned and that may bother some people. If you’re traveling with a group or family, the three-bedroom, three-bath Bird’s Nest is perfect. There’s a 1,400-square-foot private terrace complete with pool and Jacuzzi.

Cayo Espanto (Belize)

What I love about Belize is that it’s just a two-hour flight from places like Miami and Houston. I recommend it highly—especially if you’re interested in diving, fishing, or snorkeling. You also have easy access to various Mayan ruins and rainforest reserves. It’s a fantastic place to visit, whether you never leave your resort or prefer to make a few day trips.

Cayo Espanto, near San Pedro, is one of those out of the way resorts that is easy to fall in love with. The four-acre private island is dotted with seven private villas. Six of them are beachfront and there’s even one overwater bungalow. This experience is very all-inclusive and a villa host sees to your every need, making sure you enjoy three gourmet meals a day plus snacks and impromptu beach picnics.

El Silencio Lodge (Costa Rica)

While Tiamo and Cayo Espanto are beach retreats, El Silencio Lodge & Spa is a fantastic remote mountain retreat in the cloud forest of the Bajos del Toro region of Costa Rica. It’s also one of the foremost eco-luxury hotels in the world.

You’ll fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport and then enjoy a picturesque one-hour drive through the mountains. (Note: many people prefer booking the hotel’s transfer instead of driving themselves.)

Ronald Zurcher, one of the country’s foremost architects, designed this resort and it is stunning. Sixteen cabins are tiered on the mountain so each one has a fantastic view of the forest. All suites have a private viewing deck complete with rocking chairs and a whirlpool tub.

The bird watching here is superb and El Silencio even created a gorgeous and peaceful maze-like “hummingbird” garden. The many beautiful plants and flowers encourage hummingbirds of all types to visit. You’ll get some fantastic photographs in the garden!
