Destinations Things To Do

Anguilla

Boating & Watersports

Boat Racing is Anguilla’s national sport, and the island hosts countless regattas throughout the year. Additionally, cruising and sailing to many of Anguilla’s offshore cays or secluded beaches can be a great way to experience some of the island’s most pristine places. Picnics on board or ashore, sunset cocktail cruises, secluded snorkeling trips and excursions to sand cay restaurants are just some of the fun itineraries available.

Snorkeling

All of the island’s beaches provide access to reefs and rock formations where brightly colored fish can be seen. More celebrated snorkeling spots include Crocus Bay, Shoal Bay East, Junk’s Hole and Sandy Island.

Diving

Anguilla’s deeper waters are alive with beauty and history. Our island’s seven marine parks — Dog Island, Prickley Pear, Seal Island Reef System, Little Bay, Sandy Island, Shoal Bay Harbour Reef System and Stoney Bay Marine Park — are home to everything from living limestone walls to century-old shipwrecks.

Golf

A nine-hole pitch and putt course can be found at Sandy Ground, and not too far away is a miniature golf course in South Hill. For those eager to play the full 18 holes, we encourage them to schedule a tee time at Temenos, Anguilla’s first and only championship-level golf course. Designed by the legendary Greg Norman, the course has been described by the Robb Report as “the Caribbean’s answer to the 18th at Pebble Beach.” Temenos takes full advantage of the island’s lush landscape. Nearly every hole offers unrivaled views Anguilla’s turquoise waters. Another world-class golf course is currently under construction.

Tennis

Most properties have lighted courts that are available as well as resident pros eager to help you elevate your game. Two public courts are also available in the Valley at Ronald Webster Park. The most recent addition to Anguilla’s tennis community is the Anguilla Tennis Academy — a world-class facility at Blowing Point. The Academy has courts that are available to the public. It also hosts a number of youth tennis camps throughout the year.

Biking

Biking is perhaps the best way to explore the island. Flat terrain, quiet side roads and one main road make it easy to get around.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is available through a number of outfitters.

Hiking

On the interior of the island is where guests can surround themselves in scenic beauty or just be one with the birds. Hikes to natural and historic sites are plentiful and maps are available through the Anguilla Tourist Board and most hotels. Additionally, Anguilla’s salt ponds, the only wetlands on the island, serve as sanctuaries for Anguilla’s 136 different bird species including white-cheeked pintails and black-neck stilts.  Of particular note are Sandy Ground, East End, West End, and little Harbour Ponds, where pelicans, falcons, gulls, brown boobies, terns, and herons all happen to congregate.

One of Anguilla’s best-kept secrets is its small rainforest, which is located on the north side of the island. The hiking trail is accessible from the beach beyond Masara Resort, near Crocus Hill.

Taste of the Rock Island Tour

The exciting and refreshing tour takes off at the western end of the island with a stop at Devonish Art Gallery and Cheddie's Art Studio, owned and operated by two of the island's leading artists who produce high-quality work.  It continues westward with a quick stop at the renowned Cap Juluca Hotel, an ideal stop for those persons who love to shop.  A walk through the reception area provides a spectacular view of the powder-white sand of Maunday's Bay beach.  A few minutes drive, still traveling westward, provides a view of the unique architecture of Covecastles Resort, designed by the renowned architect Myron Goldfinger.  The nearby salt pond, no longer producing salt, is now the home of several species of Anguilla's bird.  Next, the tour heads east on reaching South Hill and travels along Back Street, which provides a breathtaking view of scenic Road Bay and Sandy Ground and its salt pond.  A photo shot at this stop is a must.  Cameras will be in action again with a brief stop at the Bethel Methodist Church (built in 1878) with its Gothic architecture.  Some 10 minutes later, the tour reaches The Valley, the island's capital.  Important landmarks on entry are the majestic St Gerard's Roman Catholic Church with impressive stonework, and the historic Wallblake House (a plantation house), built in 1787.  Close by are the remains of The Factory which was, during the first half of the 1900s, the center of all commercial activity in Anguilla.  On driving through The Valley, buildings of interest include the General Post Office, The Social Security Complex, Lime (telecommunications) headquarters, Caribbean Commercial Bank and the St Mary Anglican Church.  Then, it is on to Coronation Avenue, which is lined with mahogany trees planted in 1936 to mark the coronation of King George VI of England.  On leaving Coronation Avenue, the tour passes the Ebenezer Methodist Church (built in 1830), the oldest Methodist church on the island.  Next is the most photographed house on the island - the Hodge House (built in the early 1900s), and then on to Crocus Hill, the highest point on the island.  Thereafter, the tour heads for the eastern part of the island and, in about 15 minutes, arrives at the Heritage Collection Museum, which some visitors describe as "the best small museums in the Caribbean".  Located next to the East End Pond Bird Sanctuary, Heritage Collection Museum is a journey through time.  its impressive array of archaeological and historical artifacts spans many years of Anguillan history - from the golden age of the Arawak Indians to the 1967 Anguilla Revolution, which was a turning point in the history of the Anguillan people. Then, it is on to picturesque Island Harbour Bay, Anguilla's principal fishing port, which is teeming with brightly-colored boats and abuzz with activity as the fishermen go about their daily chores.  Island Harbour may have gotten its name from the fact that Scilly Cay, famous for tasty lobster dishes, is located in the bay.  From Island Harbour, thr tour goes on to the splendid Shoal Bay (East), which is, without doubt, the most beautiful of Anguilla's beaches.  A visit to Shoal Bay is a refreshing and fitting way to end a tour.  After all, one journeys back with a picture of exquisite beauty etched on the mind.  Duration:  3 hours.  Refreshments:  2 beers or soft drinks.  Cost is for one to two people.  Each additional person is $30.
